United States of America (USA) Coal Mining to 2030
Summary
GlobalData's United States (US) Coal Mining Market by Reserves, Production, Assets, Projects, Fiscal Regime with Taxes, Royalties and Forecast to 2030 provides a comprehensive coverage on the US coal industry. It provides historical and forecast data on coal production, production by company, reserves by country and world coal prices. The report also includes a demand drivers section providing information on factors that are affecting the US coal industry. It further profiles major coal producers, information on the major active, planned and exploration projects by region.
US coal production is expected to fall by 6.9% to 504.3Mt in 2023. This will be primarily driven by declining demand from the electricity sector with the ongoing coal-fired power plant retirements, coupled with the growing natural gas-fired generation, supported by low natural gas prices, and renewable power. Scheduled closure of several mines such as Buckskin, Cadiz Mining Complex, Kingston No. 2, Cedar Grove #2, CCU Belmont Strip and Condor #1 mine, which together produced 18.4Mt in 2022, will further curtail production.
Moreover, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), a climate legislation in the US, which came into force in August 2022, is incentivizing green investments in order to help cut emissions between 50% to 52% below 2005 levels by 2030. For example, the government is providing low-cost loans to utilities to shift their investments from coal to clean technologies.
According to GlobalData estimates, coal production from new mines will account for just 1% of total coal production in the US through the forecast period, given the very limited number of development projects with a reasonable chance of entering into operation over the outlook period. Looking ahead, the country’s coal output is expected to decline to 436.7Mt by the end of 2030, due to the gradual closure of around 30 mines, lower renewable energy costs and lower natural gas prices.
