Thyroid Function Tests (TFTs) are performed to evaluate the function of the thyroid gland, principally in the investigation of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. TFTs are generally prescribed when a patient is suspected of abnormal level of thyroid hormones. Abnormal levels of thyroid hormones in the body can cause either hyperthyroidism (high level of thyroid hormones) or hypothyroidism (low level of thyroid hormones). Evaluation of thyroid function can be done by determining the concentration of thyroid and thyroid-related hormones which are thyroxine (T), triiodothyronine (T), and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH).
