GlobalData expects Tanzania’s construction industry to grow by 4% in 2022, following growth of 4.3% in 2021, supported by the increased investments in infrastructure development, such as the construction of railways, roads, and an airport, coupled with spending on improving the provision of a wider and more reliable electricity network, transportation service improvements, and an increase in mineral extraction, particularly gold and coal. According to Tanzania National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the construction industry’s value add grew by 4.7% year on year (YoY) in the first half of 2022.
The construction industry in Tanzania is expected to record average growth of 7% over the remainder of the forecast period (2023-26), supported by developments in energy, transport, housing, and industrial infrastructure). In August 2022, an agreement was signed between the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) and Masdar, the UAE-owned renewable energy company, to develop 2GW of renewable energy capacity in Tanzania. Initially, the joint venture between TANESCO and Masdar will start working on developing 600MW of capacity across solar photovoltaic (PV) and onshore wind assets as Tanzania has goals to reach a nationwide electrification rate of 75% by 2035. The government has plans to increase the renewable capacity by 6,000MW by 2025. This includes projects such as the 2,100 MW Julius Nyerere Hydropower, the 358MW Ruhugii and the 222MW Rumakali Hydropower
