In June 2022, Visa and Mastercard raised the contactless limit without a PIN from EUR25 ($28.44) to EUR50 ($56.88) to promote the use of contactless cards for low-value purchases. Contactless technology is also being used for transport payments. In October 2020, transport company Arriva enabled contactless card payments on its Piran city bus fleet. Passengers holding Mastercard, Visa, or Karanta contactless cards can use them to make payments on buses.
  • Focusing on customer convenience, banks are launching new payment solutions. In September 2022, Revolut launched Revolut Pay: an online payment solution that allows faster checkout via one-click payments. Revolut Pay users can pay via saved cards or directly via their Revolut account balance. Payments are validated via secure methods such as facial and fingerprint recognition.
  • The emergence of digital-only banks will drive growth in the payment card market. In February 2021, digital-only bank N26 launched the N26 Standard bank account with no monthly charges. Account holders are offered both virtual and physical N26 debit cards. Previously it launched N26 You, Business You, and Metal accounts in Slovenia in February 2020. Meanwhile, digital-only bank Revolut offers Standard, Premium, and Metal accounts in the country, with debit cards associated with each account.
