According to a Visa survey conducted during February and March 2021, over 30% of Visa card holders were using their mobile phone to make contactless payments. All leading banks in the country now offer contactless-enabled payment cards. In April 2020, Mastercard increased its contactless payment limit without a PIN from RSD3,000 ($29.01) to RSD4,000 ($38.68), while Visa increased its limit from RSD4,000 to RSD5,000 ($48.35). These moves have supported payment card market growth.
  • Growth in ecommerce is boosting card payments in the country. According to the National Bank of Serbia (NBS), 19.1 million online transactions were completed in the first half of 2022. The number of online purchases made using payment cards rose by 26.3% in H1 2022 compared to the same period of the previous year. To capitalize on the growing market, courier service providers are accepting payments via cards instead of cash on delivery. For example, in October 2022, Serbia-based courier service provider D Express partnered with Mastercard to offer card-on-delivery payments using Mastercard-branded cards instead of cash.
  • To benefit from the growing preference for alternative payments, Google Pay launched in Serbia in August 2022, enabling consumers to make contactless in-store payments as well as online purchases. The solution is compatible with Mastercard and Visa payment cards. To make a payment, users open the app, select a saved card, and hold the phone near the contactless payment terminal to complete the transaction. The solution is currently available for ProCredit Bank and Banca Intesa customers.
