TRANSFOND, the owner and operator of the Automated Clearing House for interbank commercial payments, launched an instant payment system, Alias Pay, in March 2021. The service is available 24/7, 365 days a year. Both individual users and legal entities of participating banks can avail the service. Users simply send money from one bank account to another using the recipient’s mobile number. All participating banks offer the instant payment system via their mobile banking app. As of April 2024, participating banks include Banca Transilvania, Banca Comerciala Romana (BCR), CEC Bank, ING Bank, and SALT Bank.
Digital-only banks are helping to boost financial inclusion. The UK-based fintech Revolut launched its operations in Romania in May 2018. As of January 2024, it had over 3.5 million customers in the country. Revolut Bank offers Standard, Plus, Premium, Metal, and Ultra accounts, which all include a debit card. It also offers Revolut Junior accounts for individuals aged between six and 17 years old. Additionally, in April 2024, Banca Transilvania launched the digital-only bank SALT Bank.
