Mining Industry Analysis including Commodity Prices, Production Volumes, Projects and Capex, Regulatory Changes and Technology Advancements, Q4 2021 & Full Year
Summary
GlobalData's “Mining Industry Analysis including Commodity Prices, Production Volumes, Projects and Capex, Regulatory Changes and Technology Advancements, Q4 2021 & Full Year” report provides a quarterly mining industry update, assessing the latest commodity trends by tracking commodity prices and global and company production for coal, iron ore, gold and copper. Analysis is provided on project momentum, based on projects that commenced operations and advanced in Q4 2021. In addition, the report also provides detailed analysis of development projects in the mining industry, segregated by country, commodity, and company and development capital expenditure for leading miners. The report also analyses impact of coronavirus on the global mining industry, digitization and ESG in mining. It further includes analyses of the end use sectors such as construction, automotive, electric vehicles, crude steel and coal-fired electricity generation.
Global coal output is estimated to have risen by 4.3% in 2021 and is forecast to increase by 3.6% to 8.24Bnt in 2022. Anticipated disruption in the global gas supplies due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war is expected to stimulate exports of coal, which will be supported by production from upcoming and existing mines. India, Indonesia, Australia and the US will be the key contributors.
Lower grades, lower throughput and lower recoverable copper alongside maintenance activities were the key factors behind the declines in the company level copper production during Q4. Overall, Chile and Peruvian mines including Antamina, Las Bambas, Antapakkay and Escondida were among others were hit by strikes compromising the mines’ output during 2021.
Following a 3.4% decline in 2020, world gold mine production recovered by 2.4% to 117.1 million ounces (Moz) in 2021 linked to post-COVID operational recoveries. Canada remained the largest contributor to this growth, with output growing by 1.0Moz in 2021. This was followed by South Africa (up by 620.4koz), the US (543.5koz) and Mexico (385.7koz). The growth completely offset declines elsewhere including in China, Australia and Papua New Guinea. It remains to be seen how the war in Ukraine and sanctions imposed on Russia by major economies such as Japan, the EU and UK will affect gold production, but Kinross has already suspended operations.
