Mexico Construction Market Size, Trends and Forecasts by Sector - Commercial, Industrial, Infrastructure, Energy and Utilities, Institutional and Residential Market Analysis, 2022-2026

Summary

GlobalData has revised down the estimated growth for Mexico’s construction industry in 2022, with the industry now expected to grow by 1.4% in real terms this year, from the earlier estimate of 5.4%. This downward revision is attributed to rising inflation and construction material prices, along with supply chain disruptions, the deteriorating financial position of the government, falling building permits, and labor shortages. According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), the prices of construction materials increased by 16.8% year on year (YoY) in the first half of 2022. The escalation of construction material prices is, however, expected to stabilize in the second half of this year. According to the INEGI, the construction industry’s value add rose marginally by 0.5% YoY in H1 2022. Growth is expected to pick up pace in H2 2022, supported by the anticipated fall in construction material prices, the government’s stimulus packages for the construction industry, rising permits, and the strong implementation of projects earmarked for 2022.

The Mexican construction industry is expected to rebound at an annual average rate of 2.1% between 2023 and 2026, supported by investment in residential, transport, electricity, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), and telecommunication infrastructure projects. Furthermore, in September 2022, the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit proposed a Budget for 2023. The MXN8.3 trillion ($417 billion) Budget provided weight on infrastructure projects, seniors’ pensions, health care, and social programs. The Mexican President announced plans in May 2022 to construct three new gas liquefaction facilities at a cost of MXN61.4 billion ($3 billion) to MXN81.8 billion ($4 billion), with these projects expected to be tendered by the end of this year.
