This report analyzes the disruptive themes that have driven M&A activity in Q2 2022 across 18 sectors including aerospace, defense, & security, apparel, automotive, banking & payments, construction, consumer goods, foodservice, healthcare, insurance, medical devices, mining, oil & gas, packaging, pharma, power, retail, technology, media & telecoms, travel & tourism.
Unlike Q1 2022 which saw a sharp decline in deal value compared to the previous quarter, the M&A market in Q2 2022 managed to surpass the value figures of Q1 2022 as well as Q2 2021. However, like in Q1 2022, the deal volume continued to decline. Domestic acquisitions continued to dominate deal volume with 5,358 domestic deals compared to 2,627 cross-border deals in Q2 2022. Cross-border and domestic acquisitions volume declined in Q2 2022 compared to the previous quarter. Although, deal value for both segments saw a marginal increase. The TMT sector continued to dominate in terms of both M&A deal value and volume, with 2,718 deals worth $342 billion recorded in Q2 2022. The travel & tourism sector witnessed the highest deal value growth of 237% in Q2 2022 compared to the same quarter last year. Q2 2022 recorded 135 mega deals (valued more than $1 billion), which is ten less than the previous quarter’s record. North America, followed by Europe, continued to dominate the deal activity in Q2 2022. China, South and Central America, and Middle East and Africa recorded a decline in deal value in Q2 2022 compared to the previous quarter.
