The foodservice profit sector generated revenue of JPY27,340.8 billion ($195.1 billion) in 2023, recording a negative compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.9% during 2018-23. Outlet count fell during the period; however, there was modest transactional growth.
FSR was the largest channel, accounting for a 40.5% share of total sales, followed by pub, club & bar with 15.4% and QSR with 14.9%. FSR, QSR, coffee & tea shop, and ice cream parlor recorded value growth during 2018-23. However, pub, club & bar, accommodation, retail, workplace, leisure, and travel recorded losses.
During 2023-28, the Japanese profit sector will register a value CAGR of 6%. The number of transactions will register a CAGR of 4.2%, and the number of outlets will post a CAGR of 2.5%. The travel channel is expected to rebound and register the highest value CAGR during 2023-28, at 24.3%.
