The Italy Media Landscape Report provides an overview of the television and telecommunications market in relation to sports broadcasting in Italy today, with top-level data and detailed forecasts of key indicators up to 2028. The report analyses the television, SVOD, mobile handset and residential fixed-line broadband sectors, as well as a review of major sports media rights.
Scope
By the end of 2023, there were an estimated 6.5 million pay-TV accounts in Italy, an increase of 190,000 from 2022. Direct-to-home (DTH) satellite will remain the leading pay-TV services delivery platform in the country during the forecast period, despite the decline in its subscriptions from 4.9 million in 2023 to 4.8 million in 2028.
Clubs from Italian men’s soccer’s top-tier Serie A voted in October 2023 to accept a domestic media rights offer for the next five seasons from Sky Italia and DAZN. The bids from the incumbent rights-holders begin with the 2024-25 season and run through the 2028-29 season are worth at least EUR 4.5 billion ($4.8 billion) in total, equating to EUR 900 million ($960 million) per season.
Italy had an estimated 19.1 million subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) accounts at the end of 2023, an increase of 3.3 million or 21.2% from 2022. Over the forecast period, SVOD subscriptions will increase at a CAGR of 7.7%, supported by relatively low SVOD penetration in the country meaning there is still room for growth, rising fixed broadband penetration, investment in Italian series, films, documentaries and evolving business models.
4G was the leading mobile technology with a 68.0% share of total mobile subscriptions in 2023. However, it will decline to 29.4% in 2028 as subscribers migrate to 5G services. 5G subscription share will grow from 25.2% in 2023 to 69.0% in 2028, driven by the efforts of the government and telcos to expand 5G networks across the country and 5G plan affordability.
