Key Highlights
Germany, like the rest of the world, saw a major impact on the travel sector as a result of COVID-19. There was a Year-on-Year (YoY) increase of xx% in outbound travel between 2021 and 2022, and a YoY increase of xx% for domestic trips. This slowed increase in German domestic tourism is indicative that larger recovery from COVID-19 is occurring on an international scale.
Germany is in an established position with its tourism industry pulls for international inbound visitors which can also be applied to drawing domestic tourists, furthering future recovery, such as a growth in interest surrounding dark tourism.
Leisure is the most popular reason for travel across the board, followed by VFR travel and business. According to GlobalData’s Q3 2021 consumer survey the most desired type of holiday by German travelers is sun and beach holidays (xx%). This is to be expected as Germany does not have a year-round climate conducive to this type of holiday some travelers may seek out winter sun elsewhere. City breaks and VFR trips are also popular, with these holiday types receiving xx% and xx% of responses, respectively.
Nearby European destinations also have plenty of opportunity for these tourism types which reflects their popularity with German tourists. In 2020 xx% of travel in Germany was domestic due to the pandemic, and GlobalData shows this to have dropped to xx% of travel being domestic in 2022. This shows that while COVID-19 is still a prevalent issue, this difference shows that while German travelers are becoming more comfortable with international travel, with it likely to recover to pre-pandemic levels by 2024.
