  • Contactless payments for public transport are expected to further drive payment card use in Germany. In February 2022, the German city of Mainz launched a contactless ticketing system on buses and trams, allowing passengers to pay for their daily commutes using a contactless debit or credit card or an NFC-enabled mobile wallet. In order to make payments, passengers wave their payment method in front of a contactless POS device when boarding and exiting buses or trams.
  • Buy-now-pay-later services are gaining prominence in Germany, with an increasing number of banks, merchants, and payment providers now offering them. In January 2022, PayPal launched “Payment after 30 days” in Germany, enabling users to pay a maximum of EUR1,000 ($1,137.65) after 30 days without any additional cost. After 30 days, the amount is automatically deducted from the user’s PayPal account.
  • To increase footfall and offer fast and convenient shopping experiences, brick-and-mortar stores are offering self-checkout outlets. Sporting goods retailer Decathlon collaborated with payment solutions provider MishiPay to offer cashier-less stores. The service enables customers to scan and pay for products using the MishiPay app, and thereby avoid queues as well as contact with POS terminals. Similarly, in October 2021, the supermarket REWE launched cashier-less stores in the country. In December 2021, the supermarket Netto collaborated with payment solutions provider Trigo to launch a mobile self-checkout solution in Munich.
