Summary
Mining, manufacturing and utilities activities contributed 26.8% to the gross value added (GVA) in 2022, followed by wholesale, retail and hotels (16.8%), agriculture (12.0%). In nominal terms, the three sectors are expected to grow by 17.2%, 17.0% and 18.2%, respectively, in 2023.
Cairo and Alexandria are the best performing metropolitan areas in the country. They together accounted for 26.4% of the total GDP of the country and 15.6% of the total population in 2022, according to GlobalData’s cities database.
The HERMES index exhibited an upward trend during last year. As of April 17, 2023, the index stood at 1,871.3, compared to 1,129.6 on April 17, 2022.
