Egypt Exploration & Production, 2024 Summary Egypt is one of the leading producers of oil and gas in Africa. The country is the second-largest producer of natural gas in the continent following Algeria, and the fourth-largest holder of natural gas reserves. As of 2021, Egypt held 63 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves and approximately 3.3 billion barrels of crude oil. Hydrocarbon production stems from three main regions: The Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, and the Western Desert. Approximately 91% of Egypt’s natural gas production comes from offshore fields located in deep and ultra-deepwater terrains in the Mediterranean, accounting for approximately 65% of the national gas production. Crude oil production, on the other hand, stems mainly from onshore fields located in Matrouh constituent in Western Desert. About two-thirds of Egypt’s crude oil production comes from these fields while the remaining production comes from offshore fields in the Red Sea.
