In the same vein as Chile’s rapidly changing political and economic situation, the defense budget is fluctuating and experiencing high levels of change. The Ministry of Defense’s budget peaked in 2023 at $2.43 billion and subsequently declined by a negative growth rate by 24.1% in 2024 to $1.84 billion. This decline is primarily due to the repealing of the Copper Laws. The budget fell from $2.16 billion in 2020 to $1.84 billion in 2024 which is equated to a negative CAGR of 3.9% during the historic period. Yet, the future for Chile’s defense spending is not bleak, with the budget anticipated to recover from 2025 onward. $2.38 billion is forecast to be spent by Chile on defense in 2025; this is anticipated to increase and reach $2.49 billion in 2029. This will be due to the stabilization of the political and economic situation thanks to December 2021’s election of Gabriel Boric as president and the country’s gradual economic recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic.
