GlobalData expects the construction industry in Canada to decline by 2% in real terms in 2024, owing to continued weakness in the residential market, and declining private investments, caused in part by continued elevated interest rates but also a lack of construction demand. According to Statistics Canada, the total value of investment in single dwelling construction declined by 4.9% year-on-year (YoY) in January-June 2024, compared to annual decline of 17.3% in 2023. The main driver of this decline is the residential sector, which was the largest contributor to construction output in Canada (41.7% of total output in 2023) and therefore, has a significant impact on the industry. Furthermore, due to high construction costs and severe labour shortages, several projects have been halted or cancelled. The industry's output is expected to grow at an annual average rate of 2.4% between 2025 and 2028, aided by government investments in several transportation and housing infrastructure projects, along with the government's plan to allocate funding for mixed-use projects
