CCUS Market Outlook and Trends

CCUS Market Outlook and Trends

Summary

The CCUS pipeline is set to grow strongly in the coming years, with current project announcements offering a potential growth of CAGR 49% between 2024 and 2030. Project announcements throughout 2024 have significantly boosted the 2030 capacity scenario, which now reaches over 730mtpa across 436 projects. This compares to a previous 2030 capacity scenario of 506mtpa across 285 projects in Q1 2024. Although the macroeconomic environment for developing large-scale CCUS projects remains challenging, it is promising that 66% of the 2030 capacity has passed the feasibility stage. This illustrates that, although some projects are encountering delays, a significant proportion of the total projects are migrating into later stages of development.

Key Highlights

  • Project announcements throughout 2024 have significantly boosted the 2030 capacity scenario, which now reaches over 730mtpa across 436 projects. This compares to a previous 2030 capacity scenario of 506mtpa across 285 projects in Q1 2024.
  • Although active CCUS projects target the use-cases of storage, industrial feedstock, and enhanced oil recovery relatively equally, a pivot towards long-term geological storage will take place by 2030.
  • Pre-combustion capture currently represents the most prevalent technique, accounting for 65% of capture capacity by the end of 2024. However, a significant shift towards post-combustion capture in terms of both capacity and project volume is becoming evident within pipeline CCUS capacity.
  • A number of strategies are emerging within the CCUS market, with integrated oil and gas companies (IOCs) set to play a major role in terms of scaling both capture and storage capacity.
