Summary
Brazil is the largest crude oil producer in South America. It has proven crude oil and condensate reserves of approximately 44.5 billion barrels, of which 25.5 billion barrels remain underground. Also, Brazil holds approximately 19.05 billion cubic feet (BCM) of recoverable reserves of natural gas, of which 10.85 BCM are still to be recovered. Oil was first discovered in 1930, in the state of Bahia, but it wasn’t until 1968 that the first extraction project was developed offshore in deep waters from the Guaricema field. The first LNG plant in the country was built in 2006 with the name of White Marty and the first LNG export was made in 2012, when approximately 342.5 kilo tonnes (kt) of LNG were sold to Argentina and Japan.
