The Bahraini construction industry is expected to grow by 4% in 2023, after growing by an estimated 1.8% in 2022, and then expand at an annual average of 4.6% between 2024 and 2027, supported by investment in the oil, transport infrastructure, and housing sectors. According to the Central Informatics Organization of Bahrain (CIO), the construction industry’s value add grew by 2.6% year on year (YoY) in Q2 2022, preceded by Y-o-Y growth of 3% in Q1 2022 and 3.1 % in Q4 2021.
Over the forecast period, the industry’s growth will also be supported by foreign direct investment (FDI). During the first nine months of 2022, the Bahrain Economic Development Board (Bahrain EDB) attracted BHD346.3 million ($921 million) in foreign direct investments into key sectors, such as financial services, ICT, logistics, manufacturing, and tourism.
Construction activity in the forecast period will also be supported by the ‘Industrial Sector Strategy (2022-26)’ and ‘Strategic Projects Plan’ which outlays an investment of BHD11.3 billion ($30 billion) in Bahrain’s national infrastructure and its strategic priority sectors. According to the pipeline of projects tracked by GlobalData, as of January 2023, Bahrain has BHD30.8 billion ($81.8 billion)-worth of projects in the construction industry in various stages. Some of the major projects currently under construction are the BHD3.4 billion ($9 billion) Amwaj Islands Diyar Al Muharraq Development project, the BHD2.8 billion ($7.5 billion) Bahrain International Airport Expansion project, and the BHD2.1 billion ($5.7 billion) Sitra Oil Refinery Expansion project.
