Automotive Lighting - Global Sector Overview and Forecast (Q1 2022 Update)
Summary
Lighting is, self-evidently, a crucial safety technology for vehicles and pedestrians, enabling the vehicle to be seen at night or in poor visibility conditions and for the driver to see pedestrians, other vehicles and obstacles. The benefits of vehicle lighting are most obvious in dark conditions when more than 40% of road accidents occur. In addition to dark being a contributory factor to accidents, fog is another major cause of accidents; during the day, it has been estimated that fog is responsible for around one-third of weather-related accidents. Recent analysis from one of the three leading lighting suppliers in Europe, suggests that 30% of accidents occur at night, while 50% of accidents are due to the shortening of drivers' visual perception - these numbers explain the current concern of lighting suppliers and vehicle companies alike with improving lighting systems' efficacy, especially at night.
Automotive lighting divides into a number of clear product and technology categories, i.e., Front Headlamps, Front Fog Lamps, Stop or Brake Lights, Side Lights/Indicator Lights form the main categories; day time running lights which are now mandatory in Europe - and which will become mandatory elsewhere over time - form another new category.
Automotive lighting technology is evolving quickly and is rapidly moving away from the traditionally passive nature of its function and towards computer-controlled, active, smart systems. Sophisticated dynamic driver-assistance technologies and vehicle lighting systems are being increasingly integrated into comprehensive driver vision and driver assistance systems. All the major players in lighting are active in the development of LED headlamps and variable-beam adaptive headlight systems.
Initially, fitment of smart lights, which automatically adjust to road traffic and which switch between full and dipped beam automatically, were offered on premium cars. Such systems are now widely available, mainly still as options rather than as standard items, across the volume market, mostly in Europe and Japan
