Automotive Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning - Global Sector Overview and Forecast (Q1 2022 Update)
Summary
Demand for Air Conditioning systems in passenger cars has grown rapidly over the last decade and even basic systems can be found in the smallest and least expensive vehicles in developing countries. In the developed regions such as North America, Europe and Japan, the markets are mature and nearing saturation. As demand has increased in these markets, Air Conditioning systems can now be found even in the lower vehicle segments such as the A and B Class in Europe. Suppliers have responded by developing compact and relatively cheap Air Conditioning systems.
On a global scale these compact, inexpensive systems have also been applied to vehicles in the fast-growing emerging markets such as China where some 75 per cent of vehicles produced in 2014 offered air conditioning in some shape or form. The uptake of air-conditioning in developing nations will continue to rise in the foreseeable future with some countries such as India and Brazil offering significant potential for suppliers as their economies expand along with consumer disposable income.
In the mature markets, suppliers are having to compete on technology and price. With consumers demanding greater functionality, improved performance and efficiency, vehicle manufacturers are looking to differentiate their product offering through continuous Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning product innovation. This has led to greater penetration of semi-automatic and fully automatic systems together with the introduction of features such as multi-zone climate control, improvements in air quality and user-friendly control systems.
Emphasis is also being placed on energy-efficient systems which have been designed to improve emissions reduction and fuel consumption. This has been driven to a large extent by climate and environmental considerations and regulations. The introduction of the electric compressor is a good example of product innovation in this area.
