Frost Radar™: Automatic Number Plate Recognition, 2023
A Benchmarking System to Spark Companies to Action - Innovation that Fuels New Deal Flow and Growth Pipelines
Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) is an emerging technology that enables the recognition of license plate characters, both alphanumeric and non-alphanumeric, from still images or video footage of vehicles. The ANPR system creates a searchable database that law enforcement agencies or private companies can later use to identify vehicles that pass through a specific entry/exit point.
ANPR systems consist of high-resolution day/night internet protocol cameras, a local processing unit, and artificial intelligence-based recognition algorithms that work together to recognize and digitize the license plate numbers of vehicles passing through. When a plate number is identified, the system checks against a database of known plates, catalogued from registered vehicles, stolen vehicles, vehicles with unpaid fines, or vehicles on law enforcement watchlists.
ANPR technology is used for access control in government, commercial, and residential buildings; monitoring the entry and exit of vehicles in multi-level car parking facilities and at shopping malls; electronic toll collection on highways; parking management; tracking stolen vehicles; identifying vehicles involved in crimes; and enforcing traffic laws in cities.
