Wood & Competitive Decking
Decking demand in the US is expected to rise nearly two percent per year through 2020 in volume terms, according to Freedonia analysts. Rising personal incomes will drive gains as homeowners are better able to undertake residential improvement and repair projects. The increased usage of higher value decking materials will boost gains in terms of dollar value.
Wood-Plastic Composites to Lead Gains
Wood-plastic composite decking materials are expected to record the fastest gains in demand through 2020. Though more expensive than most wood products, wood-plastic composite decking will continue to gain market share, as these materials resemble wood but have far fewer maintenance requirements.
Strong Growth Expected in Residential Market
The residential market accounted for nearly three-fifths of the market in 2015, and is expected to register the fastest gains through 2020. Demand for decking in this market will be bolstered by strong growth in housing completions, as well as increases in the average deck size.
Decking Market Remains Fragmented
The majority of participants in the US decking industry are small, regionally focused firms, as the large size of the materials restricts how far they can be shipped before it becomes cost-prohibitive. However, there are larger decking manufacturers, including Axiall, CPG International, Fiberon, Georgia-Pacific, Hood Companies, Potlatch, Timbertech, Trex, and Universal Forest Products.
