Cabinets
US demand for cabinets is anticipated to reach $17.3 billion in 2019 on annual growth of 6.4 percent. Advances will be spurred by continuing homeowner interest in kitchen and bathroom renovation projects. Not only will homeowners replace older cabinets to impart a new look to a kitchen or bathroom, but in many cases cabinetry will be installed to add more storage space.
Kitchen Cabinets Will Remain Leading Cabinet Product Type
Products covered by the Cabinets study include:
Kitchen Cabinets (stock, semicustom, custom)
Bathroom Cabinets (vanities, medicine chests, and other)
Other Cabinets (store fixtures, entertainment centers, home office, laundry and mudroom, garage, and miscellaneous)
Kitchen cabinets accounted for the largest share of cabinets demand in 2014 and will remain the leading cabinet type in 2019. This is not surprising, as kitchens tend to have more cabinets than other rooms of a house. Going forward, design trends that call for homes to have larger kitchens with increased storage space will fuel demand for cabinets. Wood products will continue to dominate kitchen cabinet demand because of their warm appearance, while many consumers will opt for frameless cabinets because of their more modern look.
Improvement & Repair Activities Dominate Demand
Markets (New and Improvement & Repair) analyzed in this study include:
Residential (single-family, multifamily, and manufactured housing)
Nonresidential (office and commercial, institutional, industrial, and transportation and other)
Non-construction (recreational boats, recreational vehicles, aircraft, and other craft)
The residential improvement and repair segment was the largest market for cabinet demand in 2014 and will remain so going forward. Kitchen and bathroom renovations are perennially popular home improvement projects because of their ability to enhance the convenience of a home while boosting its property values. The replacement of older cabinets and the installation of new cabinetry is generally a feature of these products.
