This report forecasts US wind turbine system demand in nominal US dollars at the manufacturer level for 2020-2024. To illustrate historical trends, total demand is provided in annual series from 2009 to 2019.
Excluded from the scope of this report are turbine blades and other separately sold parts and components of complete wind turbines.
Estimates for wind turbine demand were calculated by evaluating the cost of a wind turbine relative to the turbine's rated capacity (in megawatts). The total installed cost of a wind turbine is estimated to be between $1.5 million and $2.5 million per MW of capacity. Given that the turbine itself represents a substantial portion of the total cost, Freedonia estimates that the manufacturers' cost of the turbine is between $800,000 and $1.2 million per MW of capacity.
Historical data for new and total installed wind energy capacity were gathered from various associations to build a time series. Estimates and revisions are made to this reported data when there are discrepancies between sources or when there are missing data. Forecasts for wind energy capacity are estimated based on the current position on renewable energy investment, the level of projects currently under consideration or in development, and the presence of existing subsidies and tax credits and their expiration.
