Excluded from the scope of this report are: public safety personnel (e.g., police officers, public corrections officers, federal agents, and fire fighters); in-house, proprietary security services, such as guards, detectives, and off-duty police officers on the paid staff of (non-security) business establishments; military-type private security services (sometimes called mercenaries); equipment installation services (aside from systems integration); locksmith activities; security products distribution and sales; and private correctional facility management.

For any given historical year, US dollar amounts are obtained from values expressed in the applicable local currency. These local currency values are converted to US dollars at the average annual exchange rate for that year. For forecast years, the US dollar amounts assume the same annual exchange rate as that prevailing in 2019.
