To illustrate historical trends, total sales and segments are provided for 2020-2022. Product form segments include: journals, online content, abstracting and indexing services, books, and other product forms such as audio and video content.
World regional shares of S&T publishing sales for 2022 are provided for North America, Europe, Asia/Pacific, and the rest of the world.
Sales are global and include all media that fit the research scope by subject and professional level. Scientific and technical publishing includes content and services covering hard science, or science that deals with things that can be observed and measured, and some of the more analytical social sciences. Sciences include bioscience, chemistry, mathematics, and physics, as well as the wide array of sub-topics within those areas.
Note that the term "life sciences" is often used interchangeably with biosciences, although the area is a subset of bioscience that focuses on areas related to human health and disease. The category of life science is evolving into an area between science and medicine publishing. For this report, life sciences is included within scientific publishing, although it might evolve toward the medical category in the future.
The technology subject area encompasses upper-level computer science, and all fields of engineering, including architecture, civil, electrical, electronics, and mechanical engineering, and the sub-topics within those areas. Note that there is increasing crossover between scientific and technical disciplines, such as biochemical engineering.
