E-books are defined as any book-like content that is delivered digitally. Books originally printed and subsequently digitized and books originally created in digital format are included.
Digital delivery is not limited to e-readers, as is the case in trade publishing, but includes e-collections that are a large part of library e-book use. Also included are parts of databases with enriched versions of books at their core, such as Knovel in engineering.
Also included is that portion of database products derived from books. For example, many health science books are scattered throughout general e-book vendors' collections, such as EBSCOhost and ebrary. Others are available on platforms that require subscriptions, such as ClinicalKey (Elsevier), the STAT!Ref medical database, or AccessMedicine (McGraw-Hill).
Some publishers make e-books available for purchase via their flagship platforms, such as Elsevier on ScienceDirect or Springer Nature on SpringerLink. Further, many reference platforms, such as Ovid (Wolters Kluwer) offer e-book purchase options, such as Books@Ovid.
All revenue at the publisher level is included, whether from one-off sales, subscription sales, or licensing.
Other various topics, including profiles of pertinent leading companies, are covered in this report. A full outline of report items by page is available in the Table of Contents.
