Fresh Produce Packaging: United States

Fresh Produce Packaging: United States

This report forecasts to 2028 US fresh produce packaging demand in nominal US dollars at the manufacturer level. Total demand is segmented by product in terms of: boxes and cartons; containers; pouches; trays and platters; bags and liners; plastic film; and other products such as baskets and punnets, and wood crates. Total demand is also segmented by produce category as follows: fruit; salad, lettuce, and greens; and vegetables.

To illustrate historical trends, total demand is provided in annual series from 2013 to 2023; the various segments are reported at five-year intervals for 2013, 2018, and 2023.

This report analyzes the US market for produce packaging. Produce is defined as fresh, minimally processed fruits and vegetables, and for purposes of this report includes salad mixes and fresh-cut fruits and vegetables.

For products packaged in combination-type formats – such as trays of peppers enclosed in pillow pouches – the value of each type of packaging is counted separately and included within each respective product segment.

Excluded from the scope of this report are: canned and frozen fruits and vegetables; packaging for nuts, herbs, seeds, spices, and other items that are not fresh fruits and vegetables but are commonly sold in produce departments; plastic and paper retail bags (shopping bags); plastic bags provided in produce departments for customer self-service (bags on roll); bag closures and lids that are sold separately; rubber bands and twist ties; restaurant and foodservice carryout containers, including those used for in store prepared foods; packaging used for canned, frozen, and dried fruits and vegetables; pallet wrap; and corrugated displays other than bulk bins (i.e., freestanding or hanging displays designed to hold packaged goods).

Key macroeconomic indicators are also provided with quantified trends. Other various topics, including profiles of pertinent leading companies, are covered in this report. A full outline of report items by page is available in the Table of Contents.
