“Ready to drink” (RTD) refers to packaged beverages that are sold in a prepared form and are ready for consumption. Unlike traditional beverage mixes, powders, or brew-it-yourself tea or coffee products, ready-to-drink beverages can be immediately consumed upon purchase. Bottled or canned ice tea, coffee, fruit or vegetable smoothies, energy drinks, yogurt drinks and alcopops (ready-made alcohol cocktails) are all examples of RTD beverages. Statistics show that single-serve, ready-to-drink (RTD) beverages have a $23 billion market with energy drinks and shots, sports drinks and nutrient-enhanced waters worth $15 billion. Despite a sales slump during the recession in the years 2008 and 2009, most RTD products began to surge in sales by 2010. As with energy drinks/shots, sports drinks and nutrient-enhanced waters, RTD teas and coffees consume a significant portion of this market. In 2013, these specialty beverages accounted for $565 million in USD retail sales in the United States, up from $451 million in 2011. Data showed in 2011 that ready-to-drink cans and pouches are popular with consumers because of the convenience they offer.
