Mobility Impact Report - Shipping Edition

In our latest quarterly review of corporate sustainability impacts, risks and opportunities, we find that human rights issues at sea remain a critical challenge, with 18% of deaths at sea attributed to suicide and persistent issues like unpaid wages and excessive work hours. The report highlights innovative solutions such as digital work logs and wearables to monitor health risks, alongside compliance with the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) to address ESG challenges throughout maritime value chains, requiring robust materiality assessment processes that consider both financial materiality and impact materiality.

This report analyses thousands of sustainability disclosures from 20 leading entities in the shipping industry, including Hapag-Lloyd, Maersk, and COSCO SHIPPING. Published in Q225 as part of a quarterly series, it also includes disclosures from Global South entities like Grindrod Limited and Kenya National Shipping Line. The global nature of this analysis makes it an ideal source of external evidence for sustainability accounting and disclosure, particularly for organisations implementing Maritime Labour Convention standards and aligning with SDGs for decent work conditions while adapting to stricter CSRD reporting requirements.
