Research Summary
Sodium-sulfur batteries, also known as NaS batteries, are high-temperature rechargeable batteries that use molten sodium as the negative electrode (anode) and molten sulfur as the positive electrode (cathode), with a solid electrolyte in between. These batteries operate at high temperatures, typically around 300 to 350 degrees Celsius (572 to 662 degrees Fahrenheit), to keep the electrolyte molten. During charging, sodium ions migrate from the sodium electrode through the solid electrolyte and into the sulfur electrode, where they combine with sulfur to form sodium polysulfide. This process is reversible during discharge, where sodium polysulfide decomposes back into sodium ions and sulfur. Sodium-sulfur batteries have a high energy density, making them suitable for applications requiring large amounts of energy storage, such as electric grid stabilization, renewable energy storage, and electric vehicles. However, their high operating temperature and safety concerns, particularly related to the flammability of molten sodium and sulfur, have limited their widespread adoption.
