According to ConsTrack360, Smart materials in the country are expected to grow by 9.0% on an annual basis to reach US$15,900.9 million in 2023.
Medium to long term growth story of smart materials in United States remains strong. Smart materials adoption is expected to grow steadily over the forecast period, recording a CAGR of 9.6% during 2023-2027. The smart materials in the country will increase from US$14,581.8 million in 2022 to reach US$22,902.0 million by 2027.
With concerns about energy consumption and climate change on the rise, the need for infrastructure and residential buildings that are energy-efficient and environmentally friendly is also surging in the United States. Smart materials are helping to meet this demand, resulting in a growing market size over the last few years.
From the short to medium-term perspective, ConsTrack360 expects innovation in the smart materials space to continue to grow, which will subsequently aid the industry growth in the United States. Researchers are exploring new materials that can save energy. These materials have the potential to revolutionize the construction sector in the North American market, by enabling developers to build projects that are more energy-efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable.
Innovation will aid the growth of the smart material segment in the United States construction industry
Over the next five years, innovation in the construction smart material space will play a pivotal role in the growth of the segment in the United States. Researchers have already made major inroads into the segment by developing innovative materials that can change color to save energy.
• In January 2023, researchers at the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering (PME), announced that they had developed an innovative smart material to regulate the building temperatures. Notably, the chameleon-like building material has the ability to change its infrared colors. Furthermore, the material also has the ability to change the amount of heat it absorbs and emits depending on the outside temperature.
• According to the researchers, the innovative solution can emit up to 92% of the infrared heat it contains. This allows the material to cool the inside of the building, resulting in saved energy. On cold days, the material emits only 7% of its infrared heat, which means that it can also keep the building warm. It is worth noting that the smart material comprises a layer that can incorporate solid copper, which retains a significant amount of infrared heat. Alternatively, the layer can contain a watery solution that emits infrared.
At present, the group of researchers has developed small pieces of the smart material, which are six centimeters in size. However, they have announced that multiple patches of the material could be coupled, just like shingles, to create bigger and larger sheets. Furthermore, the innovative solution can also be customized with various colors while retaining its ability to absorb infrared. Such innovative solutions are expected to aid the growth of the smart material industry in the United States over the next five years.
Pentagon has launched a project to develop self-repairing concrete material in the United States
The United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), in April 2023, announced a project that aims to develop solution for self-repairing cracks in government-owned infrastructures. The project aims to integrate self-repairing capabilities, similar to those found in living organisms, into various construction materials, including concrete. The objective of this initiative is to prolong the lifespan of defense structures, including airfields and missile silos.
For developing the innovative solution, Pentagon has selected the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Battelle Memorial Institute, and the University of Colorado Boulder. The stakeholders have suggested to incorporate a network of vasculature into concrete, which mimics the vascular system present in living organisms. Notably, this network of vasculature will facilitate heat and mass supply for substance, growth, and repair. In addition to repairing the cracks in buildings, the network will also allow the diagnosis of the root cause of structural deterioration.
Over the next four to five years, the innovative project aims to deliver smart material for larger defense structures. These innovative projects, funded by the government, will also aid the smart materials industry growth in the United States from the short to medium-term perspective.
