Viscosupplementation is a treatment that helps in reducing the joint pain, and improves the functional condition of the osteoarthritic joint. It involves the injection of a thick fluid called hyaluronic acid into the knee. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is found in the synovial fluid that lubricates the cartilage surfaces and protects the joints from shock. It greases joints so that bones can move freely and discomfort is reduced. People with osteoarthritis have reduced levels of hyaluronic acid in their joints, which causes pain. The injected gel acts as a cushion and greases up the joints. Hyaluronic acid binds to a variety of proteins, allowing it to make ligaments resistant to pressure. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis characterized by loss of function and degeneration of cartilage and tissues that cover the ends of the bones in a joint.
Market Dynamics
The increasing demand for non-surgical treatments for osteoarthritis, the prevalence of lifestyle-induced disorders, and advancements in the development of hyaluronic acid-based therapies are some of the factors expected to drive the market growth. Increasing adoption of inorganic strategies by key players in market such as acquisitions is expected to drive market growth over the forecast period. Moreover, the onset of the condition is mostly after 30 years of age, which may progress to develop into a disability after 10 years of diagnosis, thus, the rise in geriatrics population in turn, will lead to a rise in the incidence of obesity and osteoarthritis. For instance, according to the WHO (world health organization), as on 4 October, 2021, the proportion of the world's population over 60 years will nearly double from 12% to 22%. By 2050, the world’s population of people aged 60 years and older will be nearly 2.1 billion.
