Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection caused by Salmonella typhi, which causes symptoms such as prolonged fever, headache, nausea, loss of appetite, and constipation or sometimes diarrhea. The bacterium usually enters the body through the mouth by the ingestion of contaminated food or water, penetrates the intestinal wall, and multiplies in lymphoid tissue. It then enters the bloodstream and causes bacteremia. People who drink contaminated water or eat food washed in contaminated water can develop typhoid fever. Typhoid fever is majorly caused in area with poor sanitation and lack of clean drinking water.
