A surgical drill is medical equipment used for surgery purposes, it is used for the removal of the skull base bone revealing the underlying neurovascular pathways and reducing the need for extensive brain retraction. Surgical drills are also used to enable bony decompression and instrumentation in spine surgery. Drills can be powered by air or electricity. Both the hand and the foot can operate the turn-on switch. The first burr holes for cranial cases are made with an acorn drill bit or a perforator. While utilizing a perforator, continuous irrigation should be employed to prevent bone dust from clogging the drill bit and perhaps compromise the built-in automatic stopping mechanism once the inner cortical bone has been penetrated. Surgical drills are manufactured using surgical grade stainless steel (316L), although an alloy of titanium (Ti6Al4V) is also used according to the design and purpose of the surgical drills. Power drills used in orthopedic surgery can be categorized into three types: Electrical, Pneumatic, and Battery. The surgeon prefers using highly modified surgical drills, which can considerably reduce the total operation theatre time. There are mainly three types of surgical drills pneumatic drills, battery-powered drills, and electric drills. The surgical drill accessories are also the main part of the surgical drills which facilitates the surgery of the bones in different parts- spinal cord, foot, ankles, etc. During orthopedic surgery, surgical drill bits are used to create holes in the bone so that bone plates can be fixed with screws. It is possible to drill holes directly into bone without using a plate to place screws directly into the bone.
Market Dynamics
Increasing funding for educating healthcare professionals about handling the different types of surgical drills and their accessories is expected to drive the global surgical drills market over the forecast period. For instance, in March 2022, Osso VR, a validated virtual reality (VR) surgical training and assessment platform announced that it has secured US$ 66 million in funding from the SignalFire, an investment service; Tiger Global Management, an investment management company, and Kaiser Permanente Ventures, investors in healthcare firms. The funding is used to accelerate Osso VR's initiative to broaden access to surgical education for all healthcare professionals to access the surgical drills and continue the investment in hiring healthcare professionals to bring high-fidelity surgical training experiences to additional specialty areas.
