Reprocessed medical devices are single-use medical devices, which are recycled by disinfection, cleaning, remanufacturing, testing, packaging and labelling, and sterilization. Through such methods, it has made possible that the used medical devices can get back into service again. All reprocessed devices are originally labelled as single- use medical devices and compulsory to meet the quality requirements of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration such as cleaning, sterility, and functionality prior to use.
Previously medical devices reprocessing was mostly performed by hospital staffs within the hospital settings without any proper guidelines. However, in 2015, after the introduction of the U.S. FDA reprocessing guidelines, it provided recommendations for the formulation and scientific validation of reprocessed medical devices. The U.S. FDA standard guideline of medical reprocessing was adopted all over the globe. Now, mostly hospital outsource the single-used medical devices to get reprocessed by third party.
Furthermore, reprocessed medical devices are available at a low price compared to its original price, thus reprocessed medical devices are cost effective with same efficacy as the new product with no threat to patient. This helps patients from emerging economies of Africa and Asia regions to afford various treatment.
Continuous increase in the amount of medical waste and lack of proper disposal mechanism are expected to drive growth of the market. Hence, the reprocessed medical devices around 95% are recycled annually rather than getting dumped into the landfills.

Moreover, rising demand for minimally invasive treatment laparoscopy is another factor expected to drive growth of reprocessed medical devices market in developed as well as in emerging economies where laparoscopic devices such as endoscopic trocars, components and harmonic scalpels has high demand. For instance, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2015, around 6.1% of adult were diagnosed with ulcer in the U.S. With this high number of patient populations will expect to drive growth of this market.
