A personal mobility device is designed for a single person. Mobility aids are devices designed to help people who have problems moving around enjoy greater freedom and independence. Typically people who have disabilities or injuries, or older adults who are at increased risk of falling, choose to use mobility aids. These devices provide several benefits to users, including more independence, reduced pain, and increased confidence and self-esteem. A range of mobility devices is available to meet people’s needs – from canes and crutches to wheelchairs and stair lifts. Canes are similar to crutches in that they support the body’s weight and help transmit the load from the legs to the upper body. Crutches help to transfer weight from the legs to the upper body. They can be used singly or in pairs. Crutches help keep a person upright and may be used by those with short-term injuries or permanent disabilities. These devices can be manual or powered by battery and also can be used with other accessories for travelling and independent living.
The personal mobility devices are also used for participation in Paralympics sports events by the disabled athletes, so various models of these devices are developed for different games. Any assistive device that facilitates individual human transportation, for examples include powered wheelchairs, scooters, bicycles and unicycles. Although, many such devices are used by people with activity or mobility restrictions, mobility aids can be employed generally, e.g., for urban transportation in place of automobiles. Wheeled and seated mobility devices (WSMDs) are medical devices that are intended to provide mobility and function for persons with restricted or no ability to ambulate without assistance from technology. The wide variety of manual wheelchairs can be divided into two general categories: (1) those intended to be propelled by an assistant, and (2) those intended to be propelled by the user. Within these broad categories are multiple subcategories and many options and combinations. The high-strength lightweight model wheelchair has minimal adjustable features, which commonly include a small range of rear axle adjustment, arm rest positioning, and leg rest length. K0004 wheelchairs are used longer term relative to the standard manual wheelchairs and standard hemi-wheelchairs described above, primarily by people who travel very short distances in indoor environments.
