Metabolomics is defined as the large scale study of all small molecules, commonly known as metabolites, within cells, biofluids, tissues or organisms. It is the study of substrates and products of metabolism. Metabolomics is an evolving field to comprehensively identify and quantify all endogenous and exogenous low-molecular-weight (<1 kDa) small metabolites in a biological system in a high-throughput manner which are influenced by both genetic and environmental factors, lifestyle factors, medication, and underlying disease. Collectively, these small molecules and their interactions within a biological system are known as the metabolome. The metabolome is downstream of the transcriptome and proteome and is considered to be complementary to genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics. Metabolomics services include targeted and untargeted metabolomics services. Metabolomics has various applications in health and disease including drug assessment, biomarker discovery, nutrigenomics, clinical toxicology, crop breeding, etc. Mass spectrometry based metabolomics provides a useful approach for both identification of disease related metabolites in biofluids or tissue and also encompasses classification and characterization of disease or treatment-associated molecular patterns generated from metabolites.
Market Dynamics
Increasing adoption of inorganic strategies such as research collaboration, in order to provide metabolomics services by key market players is expected to drive the global metabolomics services market over the forecast period. For instance, in July 2021, Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., a manufacturer of analytical instruments, announced that they had entered into a research collaboration with the University of California, Davis, to launch Center of Excellence in clinical metabolomics to develop new technologies and reproducible analytical techniques to support rapid, cost-effective clinical research into applications for metabolomics in precision medicine.
