Medical adhesive tape, or surgical tape, is used to attach bandages, gauze, and other dressings to the skin around wounds. The majority of adhesive tapes are pressure-sensitive tapes that adhere and remain in place when firmly applied. There is no need for heat activation or a solvent for applying. Medical adhesive tapes can be made from various materials, but most are breathable for comfort and ease-of-use. Some are softer materials such as cotton, and others are more elastic to support flexibility. Examples of medical tapes are adhesive tapes, elastic tapes, silk cloth tapes, silicone tapes, and paper tapes. These tapes allow air to circulate around the wound and provide compression around the wound. Medical tape serves many important purposes in care delivery. Adhesive materials hold breathing tubes in place, secure intravenous lines and help people manage post-operative drains, ports and other devices. Medical adhesive tapes are composed of several layers including a tape backing and an adhesive layer. Tape backing is often made of silk, cloth, or paper depending on bonding with adhesive and breathability of material. Rising prevalence of road accidents and increasing number of surgeries are expected drive the global medical tapes market growth. Road accidents and other traumatic incidents are on the rise globally. For instance, WHO estimates that traffic-related deaths account for around 33% of all fatalities in Thailand each year, killing 22,941 people. Additionally, according to the WHO, there were approximately 41,862 fatalities in Indonesia related to traffic accidents in 2018. Such accidents are expected to propel the use of medical adhesive tapes over the forecast period.
