Lyophilized Drugs Market, by Drug Class (Anti-infective, Antineoplastic, Diuretics, Proton Pump Inhibitor, Anesthetic, Anticoagulant, NSAID’s, and Others), by Indication (Infectious Disease, Autoimmune Disease, Gastrointestinal Disease, Cancer, and Others), by Packaging Type (Vial, Injection, and Cartridge), and by region (North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa) - Size, Share, Trends, and Forecast, 2022 - 2028
Lyophilization or freeze drying is the process, in which the water content in the drug sample is frozen, followed by its removal from the sample. In the process of lyophilization, the frozen water content changes directly from solid to vapor without passing through a liquid phase. The process includes three steps: Freezing, primary drying (sublimation), and secondary drying (desorption). Pharmaceutical products that undergo lyophilization process include bulk pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical ingredient (API), protein, collagen, peptide, oligonucleotide, enzymes, and mAbs.
Market Dynamics
Lyophilized drugs are majorly used to treat infectious diseases and autoimmune diseases. Thus, increasing prevalence of infectious diseases is expected to aid in growth of the global lyophilized drugs market. For instance, according to The Lancet Infectious Diseases (report) published in 2021, fungal infection affects over a billion people worldwide, resulting in around 11.5 million life-threatening infections and over 1.5 million deaths, annually. The number of lyophilized drugs such as Amphotericin B (Mycoflu), Vonfung NDD (voriconazole,) and other antifungal lyophilized drugs are available in market for treating fungal infections.
Lyophilized drug manufacturers are looking forward to expand their facilities to produce lyophilized drugs on large scale, which in turn contributing to growth of the global lyophilized drugs market. For instance, on January 2021, AB Technologies (AB) announced investment of US$ 10.5 million to build a new 23,000-square-foot manufacturing facility at its site in Bloomington, Indiana. The new facility will include manufacturing area for formulating, filling, lyophilizing, and packaging drugs for early-phase clinical trial studies. Moreover, AB Technologies (AB) added aseptic filling and lyophilizer loading systems into the new facility.
Major pharmaceutical manufacturers are engaged in the development and launching of innovative lyophilized drugs, which is expected to drive the global lyophilized drugs market growth. For instance, in November 2018, Xellia Pharmaceuticals launched Vancomycin Hydrochloride for Injection, USP within the U.S. market. Vancomycin Hydrochloride for Injection is lyophilized powder to treat or prevent infections that are caused by bacteria
