Laboratory proficiency testing, often referred to as proficiency testing (PT) or interlaboratory comparison, is a quality assurance practice that is used in various fields, particularly in analytical and scientific laboratories. Its primary purpose is to assess and verify the accuracy and reliability of a laboratory's testing or measurement results by comparing them to those of other laboratories.
In a proficiency test multiple artifacts are sent between a numbers of involved laboratories. Each laboratory measures the artifacts according to a given set of instructions and reports its results to the administrator.
The results reported by each laboratory are compared to the reference value. The reference value can be determined in various ways. The two most common ways are to use a reference laboratory or use the average of the values reported by the participants.
