Intravenous solutions are fluids, which are administrated to a patient directly into the venous circulation. These fluids are sterile, nonpyrogenic solutions used for fluid replenishment and caloric supply in single dose container for intravenous administration. Intravenous therapy is ideal for patients suffering from nutritional deficiency and dehydration. There are various types of intravenous solutions available in the market such as sodium chloride, lactated ringers, dextrose in water, and others.
Market Dynamics
Increasing prevalence of diarrhoea is expected to boost the global intravenous solution market growth over the forecast period. For instance, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), in May 2017, there were around 1.7 billion annual cases of childhood diarrheal disease across the globe.
Moreover, according to an article published in the Lancet Infectious Diseases, September 2021, diarrhoea was the third leading cause of disability-adjusted life year (DALYs) in 2016, which accounted for 74.4 million DALYs, globally. According to the same source, diarrhoea was the eighth leading cause of death, which accounted for 1,655,944 deaths in 2016.
Increasing cost of vitamin C intravenous therapy is expected to hinder the global intravenous solution market growth. For instance, in 2017, the China government took regulatory action of lowering vitamin C production owing to environmental concerns. This led to increase in prices of vitamin C by around 300% over the year. Furthermore, China produces 95% of the world’s vitamin C, which is used in food products, dietary supplements, and pharmaceuticals. The price of vitamin C was US$ 3.50 per kg in October 2016, which increased to US$ 12 per kg by September 2017, owing to environmental issues, which decreased China’s 30% of the vitamin C production.
