Interventional radiology is a branch of medicine which deals with a variety of therapeutic and diagnostic procedures that are performed using minimally invasive image-guided techniques to diagnose & treat a variety of diseases. Interventional radiology (IR) can be used in the field of angioplasty, stenting, image-guided thermal ablation, embolization, thrombolysis, biopsies, and more. It can be used to cure and/or alleviate symptoms of vascular disease, cancer, stroke, uterine fibroids, and more. These procedures have less risk, less pain, and less recovery time in comparison to open surgery. Moreover, compared to the conventional surgery, interventional radiology offers less blood loss and a lower risk for infection and other common complications that come with open surgery.
Market Dynamics:
High prevalence of chronic disease, rise in number of minimally invasive surgeries, increasing geriatric population, and advancements in interventional radiology are major factors expected to propel the growth of the global interventional radiology market over the forecast period. The ageing population tends to have a higher prevalence of chronic diseases, and can have profound impact on the health and quality of life of elder population. For instance, the incidence of cancer increases dramatically with age, most likely due to a build-up of risks for specific cancers that increase with age. Thus, there has been an increase in the use of IR technologies. According to the American Cancer Society, in 2022, there will be an estimated 1.9 million new cancer cases diagnosed and 609,360 cancer deaths in the United States.
