HIV Diagnostics Market, by Product Type (Instruments and Reagents & Kits), by Test Type (Screening, Differentiation & Confirmation Test, and Monitoring Test), by End User (Hospital and Clinics, Diagnostic Laboratories, Home Care Settings, and Others), and by Region (North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa) - Size, Share, Outlook, and Opportunity Analysis, 2022 - 2028
Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV diagnosis tests are carried out to detect the presence of the virus. HIV diagnosis can be performed by blood test, saliva test, viral load test, though the most efficient test results are achieved by Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) test initially and Western Bloat Method. ELISA test, which is enzyme linked immunosorbent assay, uses the antibodies to identify the substance and the western blot technique is used to detect anti –HIV antibodies in the human serum sample.
Market Dynamics
Increasing prevalence of HIV are expected to propel global demand for HIV diagnostics over the forecast period. For instance, according to the UNAIDS 2019 report, number of HIV cases increased from 37.2 million to around 37.9 million globally, from the year 2017 and 2021 respectively. Moreover, according to the UNAIDS 2019 report, around 1.7 million new cases of people globally living with HIV was reported in 2021.
Increasing collaborations and acquisitions by the market players are expected to drive the market growth over the forecast period. For instance, in 2016, Abbott Laboratories acquired Alere Inc, a manufacturer of rapid point-of-care diagnostic tests. The acquisition was done to add tests products for infectious diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, influenza to Abbott Laboratories’ suite of products for testing genetic mutations and to boost diagnostics offerings of the company.
Moreover, rising product launches by the market players is expected to propel the market growth over the forecast period. For instance, in 2014, BD Biosciences, a segment of BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) launched BD FACSPresto near patient CD4 counter system for HIV/AIDS patients, which provide lymphocytes and hemoglobin (Hb) concentration in blood samples to stage and monitor HIV/AIDS patients. Moreover, in July 2017, bioLytical Laboratories launched INSTI HIV Self-Test in pharmacies across the Netherlands, thereby providing access to HIV tests for early diagnosis. The INSTI product line is 99% accurate and provides test results in 60 seconds or less. Moreover, the company also offers contract services to adapt the INSTI platform to meet custom functional and technical diagnostic testing requirements.
