A laryngeal mask, also known as laryngeal mask airway (LMA), is a medical device used to control the airway of a patient during anesthesia or resuscitation. It consists of a tube connected to an elliptical mask and is used as an alternative to tracheal intubation. LMA provides a safer and more effective airway than either basic airways like the oropharyngeal airway or the nasopharyngeal airway. The LMA masks are available in different sizes suitable for adults and children based on their weight and age. LMA has gained widespread acceptance among anesthesiologists as it has relatively fewer complications compared to other airways and endotracheal intubation. Some key advantages include a reduced risk of trauma to oral structures, less hemodynamic changes during insertion, and lower risks of aspiration of gastric contents. However, laryngeal masks do not protect against pulmonary aspiration the way an endotracheal tube does. They are also not suitable for procedures requiring muscle paralysis or prolonged use over multiple hours.
