Digital imaging is a radiographic technique that utilizes a wired or wireless hard sensor or phosphor plate sensors known as a receptor, instead of a film. The production of digital images requires a process called Analog to Digital Conversion (ADC). Digital images consist of pixels organized in a matrix of rows and columns. ADC consists of two steps: sampling and quantization. Sampling is a small range of voltage values that are grouped together as a single value. Digital imaging requires an x-ray unit, sensors to capture the images, computer hardware and software to view, store, and transfer images, and in case of an indirect digital system, a scanning device. Dental X-rays (radiographs) are images of teeth that dentist uses to evaluate oral health. These X-rays are taken using low levels of radiation to capture images of the interior of your teeth and gums. This can help dentist to identify problems, like cavities, tooth decay, and impacted teeth.
Market Dynamics
The increasing number of product launches is expected to drive the global dental imaging equipment market. For instance, in October 2016, Flight Dental Systems, a Canadian dental equipment manufacturer and distributor, launched Whicam Story 3 Intraoral Camera. It is a high definition camera (1280 x720) with state-of-the-art technology in intraoral cameras. The camera is available in both wired and wireless options as well.
However, growth of the global dental imaging equipment market is expected to be hampered over the forecast period, owing to high cost of dental imaging equipment for initial set-up. For instance, wired devices, which exclude software, computers, and additional hardware, are estimated to be valued around US$ 11,000 to US$ 15,000. Moreover, some equipment such as phosphor storage plates are prone to damage and require regular replacement. This, in turn, increases cost of the imaging equipment and the diagnosis procedure.
