Bone glues are a collagen obtained from an animal base that mainly includes skin and bones. Bone glues are derivative of fish’s dehydrated bladder and dense bone. The production process of bone glue is complicated, which involves obtaining animal bones from various abattoirs, meat packaging companies, and tanneries. The bones are cleaned, washed and are set under pressure to boil to demineralize it and then collagen is extracted and dried. The most used commercial area apart from healthcare industry is in manuscript publishing, carpentry, and gun powder production applications.
The bone glue market is expected to gain steady traction in the near future, as it finds application in various industries. Manufacturers are focused on reducing production costs and increasing profitability by developing multipurpose bone glues.
Market Dynamics
Increasing number of osteoporosis procedures is expected to drive the bone glue market growth during the forecast period. For instance, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information 2017 report, there are over 1 million Total Joint Arthroplasty (TJA) performed in the U.S. Annually and the number is expected to increase to 4 million by 2030.
Bone density decreases with age, often leading to bone disorders among people over 60 years of age. According to WHO, bones become especially fragile in elderly women. Approximately 1 in 4 women i.e. around 24% of women aged 50 or older suffer from falls and accidents each year. In many instances, most of the falls lead to fracture, out of which 35-40% of bone fractures are healed or joined with the use of bone glue.
