Acne occurs when the pores of the skin become blocked with oil, dead skin, or bacteria. Acne can be found almost anywhere on the body, but it is most commonly seen in the face and neck, back, shoulders, and chest. A number of risk factors can contribute to or worsen acne, which includes hormonal changes due to pregnancy or puberty, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and other endocrine conditions, cigarette smoking, poor sleep, stress, cleansers, creams, moisturizers, and other beauty products with high oil content, certain medications, including lithium, some types of hormonal birth control, anticonvulsants, and steroids, a family history of acne. There are two categories of acne, inflammatory acne and non-inflammatory acne. Non-inflammatory acne occurs when pores become clogged or closed, which leads to blemishes like blackheads. Inflammatory acne occurs when bacteria infect the blocked pore. For moderate to severe inflammatory acne one can connect with a dermatologist. The dermatologist usually gives antibiotics or other prescription acne medications such as azelaic acid, retinoids, dapsone, etc. Inflammatory acne can sometimes be treated at home. Over-the-counter (OTC) acne products containing ingredients such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and sulfur are widely available and can help treat breakouts.
Market Dynamics
Key players in the market are focused on launching acne treatment products in the market, which is expected to drive the market growth over the forecast period. For instance, in March 2022, Galderma S.A., a pharmaceutical company, announced the U.S. launch of Twyneo (tretinoin 0.1% and benzoyl peroxide 3%) cream for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris in patients 9 years of age and older. Twyneo is a fixed-dose combination of tretinoin 0.1%, a retinoid, and benzoyl peroxide 3%, a topical antibacterial. The formulation of Twyneo uses silica core shell structures to separately microencapsulate benzoyl peroxide crystals and tretinoin crystals allowing inclusion of the two active ingredients in the cream.
